A quick survey of the state of Protestant morality, such as soft stances on homosexuality, displays a religion that has adapted to modern norms. Rather than holding true to Holy Tradition, it has essentially been grafted into the religion of the Enlightenment: Progressivism. The Scriptures, which are often cited as the sole authority, are read through the lens of Progressive thought. The pace of acquiescence to Progressive ideology varies from denomination to denomination, but mainline Protestants are often the most affected, having at the very least splintered into ever more sects. The Lutherans in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America have embraced same-sex marriage. The main Anglican body in America, the Episcopal Church, has approved same-sex marriage across all of its dioceses. The United Methodist Church still doesn’t allow gay marriage, but does allow for the ordination of transgender priests. Of course, that isn’t progressive enough, as they’ve also seen a significant schism over the issue with the Global Methodist Church. The Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) has also gone down the same path, and for the others, it seems it is just a question of how long until they follow suit. The more “conservative” groups that haven’t caved to that specific issue, have deviated in other matters, such as the acceptance of birth control, fornication, and Zionism. It is tempting to conclude that Protestants are simply being negatively influenced by post-Enlightenment culture. Despite the fact that by today’s standards the original reformers would be considered “far-right”, the conditions for the Enlightenment in the West were made fertile by the Protestant Reformation.
